Our Commitment to Accessibility
Elisabeth's House is committed to ensuring digital accessibility for people with disabilities. We continually improve the user experience for everyone and apply the relevant accessibility standards in both our physical facility and online presence.
Conformance Status
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) define requirements for designers and developers to improve accessibility for people with disabilities. It defines three levels of conformance: Level A, Level AA, and Level AAA.
Elisabeth’s House strives to be conformant with WCAG 2.1 Level AA. We are continuously working toward full conformance and welcome feedback from our users.
Physical Accessibility at Our Facility
Our Hagerstown, Maryland facility is fully accessible to individuals with mobility limitations. Our physical accessibility features include:
- Wheelchair-accessible entrances and common areas throughout the building
- Accessible private suites and shared bathrooms with grab bars and roll-in showers
- Elevator access to all floors
- Handrails installed in all hallways and stairwells
- Designated accessible parking spaces near all main entrances
- Wide doorways to accommodate wheelchairs and mobility aids
- Well-lit pathways and corridors throughout the facility
- Accessible dining areas and recreational spaces
Web Accessibility Features
Our website has been designed and built with accessibility as a core requirement:
- Semantic HTML5 structure with a logical, consistent heading hierarchy
- All images include descriptive alternative text for screen reader users
- Sufficient colour contrast ratios throughout — meeting or exceeding WCAG AA standards
- Full keyboard navigation support across all interactive elements
- ARIA labels and roles on all buttons, forms, and interactive components
- Responsive design that works across all screen sizes, from mobile to desktop
- No auto-playing audio or video content
- Focus indicators visible on all interactive elements
- Form labels and error messages that are clear and accessible
Assistive Technology Support
Our website is designed to be compatible with a range of assistive technologies, including:
- Screen readers (NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver, TalkBack)
- Voice recognition software
- Switch access devices
- Browser zoom up to 200% without loss of content or functionality
Known Limitations & Ongoing Improvements
Despite our best efforts, there may be some areas of the website that do not yet fully meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA. We are aware of this and are actively working to address all accessibility barriers.
We conduct regular accessibility reviews and update our website and physical facilities as improvements are identified. If you encounter any barrier that is not listed here, please let us know so we can prioritise a fix.
